John McCain’s convention gambit calls for culture war around the Sarah Palin pick. And now the Politico is reporting just that: Palin reignites culture wars. An option is forming. This is my attempt to describe it before her big speech in St. Paul.
John McCain’s convention gambit is a culture war strategy. It depends for its execution on conflict with journalists, and with bloggers (the “angry left,” Bush called them) along with confusion between and among the press, the blogosphere, and the Democratic party. It revives cultural memory: the resentment narrative after Chicago ‘68 but with the angry left more distributed. It dispenses with issues and seeks a trial of personalities. It bets big time on backlash.
At the center of the strategy is the flashpoint candidacy of Sarah Palin, a charismatic figure around whom the war can be fought to scale, as it were. The Politico is reporting just that: Palin reignites culture wars.
I have no idea if the ignition system will work; nor do I claim that “this is what they were thinking” when they made the decision to nominate Alaska Governor Sarah Palin. Other interpretations may turn out to be truer than mine. This is my look at the bets McCain and company seem to be placing. I am not recommending the strategy. I am not predicting it will succeed. I think it was improvised, like my description here….
The storm around Sarah Pailn overtakes the story of the Republican convention and merges with it, like a smaller but stronger company taking over a larger but troubled enterprise. Behind the storm a “wave narrative” builds as her appointment generates headlines on multiple fronts. The irresistible force of fact-fed controversy meets the immovable enthusiasm for Palin as cultural object: charismatic every woman straight from the imaginary of conservative America.
The evangelical wing, and other social conservatives are strongly moved by her candidacy. More and more of their commitment to McCain is vested in him through her. As Andrew Sullivan writes: “The emotions involved - especially among the Christianist base who have immediately bonded on purely religious and cultural terms with Palin - are epic.”
Continued bad news on the investigation front adds further drama, new fact streams and more protagonists to the Sarah Palin story. As more comes out about the decision to name Sarah Palin to the ticket, it’s harder to see how anyone on the inside thought it McCain’s best choice for president-in-waiting.
Bloggers and open platforms continue to publish riskier—and risque—material, some of it unfit for family consumption, some of it false, salacious and reckless, some of it true, relevant and damaging, a portion of which is picked up by the traditional press.
As more emerges about how the McCain camp made the decision, the appointment looks more and reckless, the decision rushed, the vetting inadequate. This leads to advanced jeering from the left, intense criticism in the press, damaging leaks from within the Republican party, fueling calls from within and without for Sarah Palin to remove herself.
Sarah Palin under intense pressure then gives a charismatic performance on Wednesday of convention week and wows much of America, outdrawing Obama in the ratings and sending a flood of cash to McCain and the GOP.
Journalists watching all this keep saying to themselves: wait until she gets out on the campaign trail. Wait until she sits for those interviews with experienced reporters and faces a real press conference.
Meanwhile, the investigation of her performance in Alaska puts more and more pressure on the Palin appointment as things come out that would ordinarily disqualify a candidate from consideration or cast doubt on her truthfulness in a grave way.

This is the most depressing thing I have ever read. God help us all.
Give me a break. The deomcrats are yelling loud because they know Gov. Palen, as a working mom, can relate directly with many women accross the country.
She is conservative, duh … the Republican party is conservative overall just like the Democrats are liberal.
So what?
Gov. Palin also has more executive experience than Obama has. Obama was a part-time Illinois state senator and a “community organizer” before he won the Illinois primary for US Senate by accident. He wasn’t expected to win the primary, but did with 7 people fighting for it. Then, when the Republican who was expected to easily win that seat, Jack Ryan, jumpe dout of the race, Obama won an easy race.
The rest of this stuff is wacky. Watch her speech and watch her on the campaign and you will see why the Democrats and running scared.
Remember, this is a neck and neck race when everyone expected the Democrats to win easy …. not going to happen.
Get ready for President John McCain and Vice President Palin.
Besides, since this is the most important, look at McCain’s background and service to his country and look at Obama. Not even close.
It is very scary how the Republicans have managed to influence and control their base via an us versus them thinking. They are polarizing the electorate and playing the Dems and media for a backlash. The VP appointment was completely political and idealogical. This article is describing exactly what they are doing. This was going to be the only way that they were going to get any viewers for their convention and challenge Obama and the Dems.
What would really be an epitaph for American democracy would be if McCain’s strategy worked!
ets get a few things clear. first, palin is an actress with lots of training from her beauty queen days. she is very comfortable with using marketing moguls to sell herself. what has this to do with meaningful leadership. look what that got us with nixon–remember him and the selling of the president?
second, what makes you think this highly entitled beauty queen with her hands in the big oil cookie jar (her hubby) can relate to women who HAVE to work to support themselves and their families.
third, and while she is out there touting the wonders of anit-womanhood with her support of library censorship and hostility toward birthcontrol and abortion, what is her wonder brat doing but doing the nasties with her fellow heathens!
i think the best strategy is to ignore her to a good degree and come out fighting when she says really stupid stuff about the economy and international affairs. and to stay focused on mcbush and his flip flopping policies.
actually, she may prove to be the better speaker, even if she doesn’t know much of value. mccain is a mental cripple riding on his alleged power.
An accurate prediction of a speech that has now taken place. However, the extent to which Palin stooped to sarcasm and belittlement was underestimated by this prediction.
In short, she’s a bitch.
Pointing out this obvious feature will endear her to anti-media neo-cons, who will in turn attack the “bad media” for saying it.
I doubt that anyone else will find such negativism politically appealing.
Good day!
It is very informative and has a very good quality in it.
I like it…

Thank you very much for your time.
I am glad somebody has separated the diference between racisam and culturalism!
anyone who believes that Obama will bring about real change or that Palin & McCain are gonna “shake things up” in Washington is just delusional. Both the Dems & the Repubs are beholden to the large corporations who get them elected, so expect more of the same plutocracy in lieu of a representative democracy.
I’m happy to read this info on mediachannel.org.
I wonder why, after donating my $100 to mediachannel.org to become a “media freedom fighter,” I never received any acknowledgment of membership by email.
I wonder why, after 3 months have passed, I have yet to receive a copy of Danny Schechter’s book, “The Death of Media” or the DVD documentary “WMD: Weapons of Mass Deception.”
The fine people at Globalvision saw that I got the Dvd I ordered from them, “In Debt We Trust” which I viewed and recommend to others.
I receive products and emails from the few other organizations that I support.
Why can’t mediachannel.org fulfill its obligations (clearly listed at http://www.mediachannel.org/membership.htm ) to those who support it?
I post this to ask other people if they also feel they’ve been cheated by this website.
