This year marks the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human
Rights, so the international media development organisation Internews is
asking journalists from around the world to participate in its Every Human
Has Rights Media Awards. Send in your powerful and eye-opening stories that
illustrate the declaration by 15 September 2008.
Stories must explicitly refer to those human rights enshrined in the
declaration. Show how the declaration is relevant and contemporary by
linking it with issues that affect your local audiences, such as climate
change, food security, migration or press freedom.
Thirty lucky winners will be awarded a trip to Paris in December, where
they will meet human rights leaders and receive a prize for their
contribution. There’s a chance they might catch site of The Elders - a
group of world leaders including Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu and Jimmy
Carter that use their wisdom to tackle some of the world’s biggest problems
- as they are avid supporters of the Every Human Has Rights campaign.
Among the 30 winners, special awards will be given to the most courageous
investigation/best unpublished story (2,000 euros, US$3,120) and the most
eye-opening report (1,000 euros, US$1,560). Plus, all winning stories will
be published on the awards website in their original language with an
English translation, potentially leading to broadcast and publication by
other media outlets.
Applications will only be accepted online. Apply here, between 15 August
and 15 September: www.everyhumanhasrights.org or contact Agathe Dalisson
