The Northern Territory government should hold a coronial inquiry into the assassination of an Australian journalist during the 1975 invasion of East Timor, actor Anthony LaPaglia says.
LaPaglia has called for the inquiry into the death of journalist Roger East, who was killed in December 1975 while on assignment in East Timor.
The Hollywood actor plays East in the upcoming film about the Balibo Five journalists killed by Indonesian forces during the country’s invasion of East Timor.
The 51-year-old East was in East Timor investigating their deaths.
The Northern Territory government decided last year not to hold an inquiry into East’s death, partly on the grounds he had only lived in Darwin for 10 months before he was killed.
“Roger was an Australian citizen … so why does it matter where he was from,” LaPaglia told Fairfax newspapers.
“The Northern Territory is still under Australian jurisdiction, right?”
Witnesses said East was shot after being captured by Indonesian troops during the invasion.
No one has ever been tried over his death.
LaPaglia has also called on the federal government to send a forensic team to East Timor to recover the remains of East and the five Australian newsmen killed in Balibo.
