Moyers lands Rev. Wright interview

Rev. Wright speaks as a modern day prophet in the mode of Old Testament prophets who said that God would damn sinning nations, and the Rev. Wright believes that America has sinned because of pride and greed and the killing of innocents. Old Testament prophets tend to be a little blunt and forceful and the powerful do not like what they say. So, for Rev. Wright to say America is damned unless it changes its ways is not out of line with most fundamental preachers. I have heard many white preachers say the same thing, only not so forcefully or beautifully phrased. Rev Wright just happens to be black and one of his flock has the temerity to run for president.

I just saw the speech Rev. Wright gave at the NAACP dinner tonight. It was powerful, and very different from the Bill Moyers interview last Friday. I expect Rev. Wright’s speech at the National Press Club tomorrow will yet be different still. These three events together create a much more complete picture of who this magnificent person, Rev. Wright, really is.

Bravo Public Television! Bill Moyers’ interview with Rev. Jeremiah Wright was phenomenal. This is why Public Television is so essential to our democracy. Finally, we have a chance to see and hear from someone whom we find, thanks to Mr. Moyers, is among the finest examples of a true American patriot. The photo Mr. Moyers shows of Rev. Wright standing over President Johnson at his most vulnerable, lying unconscious on an operating table, was nothing short of outstanding and revealing of Rev. Wright’s trustworthiness and profound patriotism.

I hope each of us will consider the atrocity FOX News engineered, which was quickly amplified by many other so called “news media”, essentially creating a campaign of fear and rage–showing and reporting on the relentless looping of sound bites made highly incendiary, like napalm bombs of disinformation, with little trace of context.

In my view, this was a criminal act, no less serious than standing in a crowded theater and yelling FIRE, causing a life-endangering stampede when in truth there is no fire. It is no less than a hate-crime, perpetuated by corporate media in its most toxic form. Because of their reckless disregard for truth and public safety, they have created a situation where people associated with Rev. Wright’s church have been made to fear for the lives.

This is not about free speech or freedom of the press; it is clearly about abuse of power. I wonder how many feel as I do that it would not be unreasonable to investigate the possibility of legal recourse against FOX News, now that we have the beneficial contrast of Mr. Moyers’ insightful interview with Rev. Wright, which aligns with the highest ethic in journalism.

As events occur that compel us to respond to the unfolding conditions of race relations in today’s America, and as an African-American, I’m especially mindful of our visibility and our duty to those, the young, who look to us for guidance.

Indeed, the future is calling us to the rescue. How do we respond?

With restraint, intelligence, principled action, and a caring respectful heart, we can influence meaningful public engagement–a unity through diversity. For in the long range, race is the least of our worries when Black, White, Yellow and Brown face the equalizing crisis of survival of the human species. We, the people, have the power to achieve harmony from mutual benefit, moving us all from surviving… to thriving.
