Lack of investigative reporting is a sign of a corrupted press. Our paper the Crested Butte Chronical became the object of a bitter fight when it took on the local ski area, something that will never happen again. There was a forced sale to a murder cult which did little to help journalism.
The turtle is the symbol of modern local press. Offend the real estate lobby and your out. Offend the ranching small industry lobby with stories about illegal immigration and your knocked out. You can get away with medical stories as the medical industry does not advertise aggressively. Notice there are few stories about highways as health hazards. ATV stories had better be "balanced" or the dealer pulls his ad. By the time th publisher finishes kissing asses the week is over and there is another set of Dick and Jane stories from the local press.
Glad to see the Rocky coming back it missed the S&L story and has been soft on US West.

Marvin Kalb: "Investigative journalism has been in danger as long as I've known it". This response seeks to diminish the seriousness of the media crisis produced by its abandonment of its Constitutionally mandated role - - acting as the "free press" watchdog of our politicians. The corporate owned media have been flushing themselves down the drain at an accelerated rate since the beginning of the Clinton administration and are now in a moribund state since being co-opted by the G W Bush administration's media machine. It is getting rather late to assert that investigative journalism might survive the downfall of honest and effective investigative efforts by the current crop of what we call the "mainstream" media.
However, many top reporters and commentators have left the "mainstream" and joined other efforts to continue the task they assumed when originally employed by the corporate press or TV, and they showing signs of succeeding. What hopefully will occur will be a TRANSFORMATION of our news media, not merely a reformation. Corporate heads and ideologically driven Fox News style "journalists" are interested only in money and power, not honest journalism. Their dimishing fortunes are a well deserved outcome of greed and stupidity.
