This is a terrific and clear analysis of how some media fell down on the job. Anyone who read "nontraditional" media certainly knew what was going on with the credit industry. So WHY did traditional outlets fail to grasp the story adequately?

Here's my suggestion to help counterbalance the power of the credit industry: make financial literacy a mandatory course in middle school (I think high school is actually too late). Arm kids with knowledge and they stand a chance.

Americans do not own anything they simply rent it from the credit card companies. A few people like to own their percived property. The Anti Shy laws went down the tubes with the buying of people's right to own rather than rent their stuff.
Having had to confront the collection attempts on spouses. The ravenous collection departments can be brought into line and stop, seizure, harassment and endless threats.
What is interesting is the ease which people lose their economic freedom and how with he Patroit Act the government has joined with the banks in regulating people's economic freedom and privacy.
