JERUSALEM, March 12 (Reuters) - Israel said on Wednesday it would no longer cooperate with the influential Arabic television station Al Jazeera, accusing it of one-sided reporting that favours the Palestinian militant group Hamas.
Al Jazeera denied any bias in its reporting and said it had received no formal communication from the Israeli government on the decision.
Israeli officials said the government would not grant interviews to the Qatar-based satellite station and could deny visas to its employees due to its coverage of fighting between Israel and militants in the Hamas-controlled Gaza Strip.
“If they represent one side at the expense of another without being objective, why do we have to deal with them? Why do we have to give them services?” Israeli Deputy Foreign Minister Majalli Whbee told Reuters.
Whbee said the Foreign Ministry would lay out its concerns in letters to the station’s headquarters and Qatar’s government. Al Jazeera also broadcasts in English — a service that would not be affected by the boycott, an Israeli official said.
Al Jazeera said it was surprised by the announcement on Israel radio.
“Al Jazeera has always endeavoured to cover the news in a fair and balanced and professional manner,” Al Jazeera said in a statement sent to Reuters in London.
Walid al-Omari, Al Jazeera’s bureau chief in Israel and the Palestinian territories, said the station’s reporting was unbiased and showed no sympathy to Hamas or anyone else.
Omari said spokesmen from the Foreign Ministry had not cooperated with Al Jazeera for at least two weeks.
“We invite them to come up and talk, they begin to give all kinds of excuses,” Omari told Israel’s Army Radio.
An Israeli official accused the Arabic-language station’s staff, together with Hamas, of “staging” footage of a January blackout in Gaza after Israel cut fuel supplies in what it said was a response to cross-border rocket salvoes.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said government representatives had met twice with Al Jazeera staff in recent weeks to discuss their concerns.

The Isreali government is always portraying itself as victims, defending itself. The moment it is revealed that this is not the case, they want to collect their marbles and yell “not fair.” Isreal can’t take any criticism, especially if the criticism is true.
Thankyou. Arab media has no choice but to be bias, not to have the Arab slant portrayed would be suicide, it would be asking for your own beheading. More recently BBC after Johnsons return from his kidknapping, they are running scared. Even the British new history books, deleted the Nazi death camps, for fear of offending the Arabs. Arafat was famous for telling the west one thing, and competely opposite to his own people. All Arab media has no choice. Israel only needs to know, what they are willing to live with. Rockets keep coming, scortched earth policy. The palestinians voted Hamas in Power, and if their public gets punished for the rockets, so be it. By voting for Hamas, they are begging for collective punishment.Historically the majority of Arab Nations do not wish an end to this conflict, do not wish to recognize Israel and the roots of ISLAM that came from the first Jew Abraham. Cut your roots, life becomes short. Peter
Just like Obamas preacher is preaching for the blacks and against the whites so is Egipt sticking up for the muslims
Israel does not like anything critical of it’s religious state, like it’s neighbors.Religious states are totalitarian it follows that Israel is as large a hypocrite as the Muslim states surrounding it, ask Rachel Cory. The Jewish State, is after all, like the United States, a torture state. Our president is proud to have us be a Christian Torture State.
As an American, I see the issue centering around the Zionist dogma within the Israeli government that mandates the aggressive expulsion of the Palestinian people from their land. Continued incursions into the West Bank exacerbate the tension in the region and will not subside until the world community finds the backbone to demand Israel to stop and adhere to international law. Many Israeli Jewish citizens and American Jews find Zionism appalling and have demanded change.
The Congress of the United States in muted and weakened by the growing neoconservative movement, the financially powerful Israeli lobby, the military industrial lobbyists, the corporate media fascists and sadly, the apathetic and ignorant American people; who constitutionally have all the power. Unfortunately American global imperialism marches in lock step with Israel’s regional nationalistic expansion movement. This insidious partnership has become the contemporary axis of evil.
On top of all this, other Arab countries are apathetic towards the plight of the Palestinians. Who is going to step up and help these people?
I do believe there is hope forthcoming as the growth of nascent independent broadcast entities (e.g., Link TV, Al Jazeera, etc.) as well as many Internet websites will become the “looking glass of truth” for the world. It’s just going to takes time for the momentum of conscience to build before the groundswell of people open their eyes and give attention to this unbearable and unnecessary human suffering.
