CBS was owned by Westinghouse. They were purchased by GOP-loving Viacom; recently, Viacom spun off CBS Corporation as a separate entity. Les Moonves is President. The Board of Directors includes Viacom chief poobah Sumner Redstone, corporate lawyer David R. Andelman (not to be confused with journalist David Andelman), William S. Cohen (former Republican US Senator), Gary L. Countryman (Chairman Emeritus, Liberty Mutual Insurance) and Charles Gifford (Chairman Emeritus of Bank of America). There are a smattering of names with ties to the Clinton and Carter administrations, but the board is dominated by the bank/credit card/insurance/public relations sectors.

To Fox and the right wing, fair and balanced means you can’t report any news that might be construed as negative to your side, or positive to the Left. I’ve heard people complain about the “liberal media” but where was this “liberal media” in the 2000 election (where every media outlet ignored Bush’s truncated military service) or the build up to the war (other than Knight Ridder)?

I’d like to add that anyone who thinks CNN and MSNBC are leftist haven’t got a clue as to who owns and controls them. For a big part, the defense industry and defense contractors. MSNBC is owned by General Electric and Microsoft who donated 1.1 million to George W. Bush’s campaign. CBS is owned by Westinghouse whose #1 board member is Frank Carlucci, the president of the Carlyle Group. CNN is owned by Time Warner who donated 1.6 million to George Bush’s 2000 campaign. All of major media in this country is owned and controlled by the power elite and none of them are liberals. As for FOX, everybody with an idea realizes they are the right arm of the RNC.

It seems to me this idea in swaying the nation to the right began in media long before 1996. I see it as starting in the late 60’s early 70’s when Nixon was in power and unions were being blamed for all our nations woes. Then in the 80’s under Reagan suddenly the term liberal became a dirty word and along with unions was being associated to communism, just as it was in the 50’s during the McCarthy Era.

My guess would be this orchestration really began shortly after unions became legal and the New Deal became a reality. Only in 1996 did it so blatantly and arrogantly raise it’s ugly head, but there has been a consistent push to make the right moderate and the left commie for a long time now.

Of course never in history has the media been more consolidated either. This makes it more similar to Stalinist, state run news then Stalinist state right news.

As part of the people crushed by the Coke or Pepsi news business I feel that news collectives or coops are maybe the only way to go.
Al Aronowitz was good enough to publish me from 97 up to his death on the Blacklisted Journalist, He knew what was happening. I knew as did my publisher at Monte Libre and the writers working there. We were called conspiracy nuts and left to be nitch published on the web after the Left Press started folding.
Calhoun had made the Panama Deception and won an Oscar but there was no room for any of us outside cable access which in Colorado was crushed as was PBS doing Indy work.
Media is closed to independent producers unless they have a bundle to pay off the gate keepers.
Indy media was crushed in Denver when it attempted to be independent of the left, PC, Hillary wing of Colorado Democratic Party. The Convention was coming and they had to closet the many skeletons wandering the Denver media scene.
Mike Moore behaves like a mogul of the Left and I do not see eye to eye with Cockburn which makes me as the North Vietnamese representative said all those years ago “politically unreliable”. This is what happens when you tell the truth about the media.

This is a bunch of hog-wash.

First, FOX always have people on from the left on their talk programs.

The news programs are much more balanced then MSNBC or CNN which lean very left.

ABC, NBC, and CBS vary to the degree they lean left, but when you look at just NEWS programs, FOX does a good job.

What FOX did do, was present news and market it as being FAIR & BALANCED. This sure pissed off the other news outlets. They are number one ratings wise for CABLE news.

They also presented the RIGHT in good light really for the first time. This gives the impression of FOX leaning right … because everything else leans very left.
