The National Association of Black Journalists has requested that Citadel Broadcasting end ongoing negotiations to bring radio personality Don Imus back to the airwaves.
Citdel Broadcasting, owner of ABC Radio, may announce a deal for Imus to fill the morning slot on WABC-AM by early December, according to a Newsday article.
Imus’ nationally broadcast show on WFAN was canceled in April after he called members of the Rutgers college basketball team “nappy-headed hos.”
NABJ President Barbara Ciara said putting Imus back on the air is an insult.
“NABJ remains outraged after the racially inflammatory insults made by Don Imus last spring. He used his free speech to broadcast hate speech. To put him back on the air now makes light of his serious and offensive racial remarks that are still ringing in the ears of people all over this country,” said Ciara, an anchor and managing editor at WTKR NewsChannel 3 based in Norfolk.
Officials with the organization that represents more than 3,000 black journalists nationwide said they questioned why any broadcast company would allow Imus to return “to continue his history of racial insults on his program.”

Isn’t it ironic that the most underrepresented on air, at computor group of journalists wishes to exercise censorship over another? It is symbolic of the age of PC. This stand is the same as the psychologists professional reorganization agreeing that torture as a way of helping humanity.
This is the most ridiculous story I’ve read in a while! Journalists for censorship! Why are these people so afraid of a 67-year-old white guy and not people who actually affect their lives - you’re going after the wrong person. It’s baffling.
Journalists not for the 1st Amendment?
It is baffling why they’re determined Imus should be silenced? It’s not going to work this time.
The National Association of Broadcasters are using a double standard. They must handle the problems they have in front of them.
Who do they represent. Black Broadcasters. Is Don Imus a Black Broadcaster? And him broadcasting on WABC (Citadel Broadcasting) going to hurt their position? I don’t think so. They are talking out of both sides of their mouth.
Get with it you 4000 member group. Attack what is truly important. If you continue to attack Don Imus your importance will diminish. No one will respect you. You already made fools of yourself by giving NBC’s Steve Capus an award for promoting a couple black broadcast executives. When really you honored him for removing Imus’ show on MSNBC. Steve Capus is a worm.
Wake up and go for the the true issues you face and leave Suleman to announce his decision, which he has already made.
Your nuts!
“NABJ President Barbara Ciara said putting Imus back on the air is an insult.”
If you’re insulted by his return …then you’re insulted. Get over it. If I could “extinguish” everything and everybody in this world that has “insulted” me over the years I would be sitting alone in a very barren place wishing I’d possessed more patience and understanding. But, then, are you really insulted …or is there another agenda going on here?
They can’t be serious!? “Journalists” against free speech? “Journalists” by just the name of their organization is racist. We know where you’re coming from before you open your mouth. Before it’s all over, your first black board member will be Don Imus. He will save you from youselves by organizing a true dialogue about the real issues that brought us all to this point.
This is one more indication of how conservative major media are. They’re desperate to get Imus back on TV, where he can continue to degrade and show contempt for all “inferior” peoples. But, anyone that shows the tiniest evidence of an occasional “liberal” notion, such as Bill Maher did, is thrown off network TV, with no hope of re-instatement, even if he and his show are immensely popular and profitable to the sponsoring network. Maher is the quuintessential “moderate.” There isn’t a liberal bone in his body, save in a few social issues, where a liberal viewpoint benefits Maher personally, which shows you how overwhelmingly conservative our media bosses are.
This is kind of like doctors in favor of cancer.
Hey, NABJ, why don’t you care about the work Imus does for autistic kids and their parents and caregivers? The man isn’t perfect but does more for the greater good of this country than any other talk show host. He raises money for sickle cell anemia research too by the way. Don’t you journalists have anything better to do than attack one of the few champions for children our country has these days?

Hey John and anyone that thinks Imus is going to degrade people when he returns.
You don’t know this man do you. You have listened to the media, Sharpton, Jackson and this N.A.B.J.
They just don’t like the fact that they can’t get there way. Take Michael Vick, O.J. Simpson and Isaoa Thomas and throw them in a pit. This is what they should be concentrating on. Not John Donald Imus, the Champion of the little guy.
The can stomp their feet. Write letters and make phone calls. Them and NOW can take a short walk off a long pier as far as I am concerned. But Imus is returning. in 53 days and 12 hours like it or not.
Good night and Good Luck.
Are they kidding! Why are these people concerned with anything an old white dude has to say about anything? I hope there aren’t more spineless morons like Les Moonves and Steve Capus out there but but these aren’t even people who listen to the show or support his sponsors so who cares what they say about Imus.
these so called black groups.(sounds racist to me.do they have white members???) couldn’t carry imus’s lunch. a forty year hall of fame broadcaster who gives all for the children. he deserves all the chances it takes. at least he learns from his mistakes. love the IMAN forever. SEMPER FI!!!!!!!
NABJ Satire : Journalists for Censorship
The NABJ would be better served if it were to focus its efforts on protecting African American Women in the media sports world then censoring Imus…
David Stern has said the NBA would not discipline the Knicks in the wake of a jury’s finding that the corporate parent MSG, the team and Isiah Thomas, the team president, have sexually harassed a former team executive.
Imus satirized the “hip-hop” culture causing millions of people to discuss and consider the effects of the culture on the African American community and race relations in general. Isiah Thomas sexually harassed an African American Media/Sports/Entertainment Executive causing her to loose her job and be publicly humiliated and disgraced.
Imus broke no laws, violated no rules or regulations and yet the NABJ demands his banishment from airwaves. MSG and Isiah Thomas are guilty of sexual harassment and the NABJ remains silent. Why hasn’t the NABJ demanded the NBA sanction MSG and the principles involved with suspensions and fines? There is a credibility issue here.
NHH Satire: Joke is an old white guy talking “hip-hop”.
It’s pretty basic, If you like Imus, listen to/ or watch him, (I love him). If you don’t like or hate him don’t watch him or listen to him How simple can it be?
What was more offensive to me was when Whoopi Goldberg on The View”, said she would like to ‘do Nancy Pelosi’s husband, and she might ‘do Nancy’
Just get Imus back on the air. Television would be nice, too. Maybe R F D channel, Nashville or the comedy channel. Who cares what these people in the article say. Can not wait until December, what a great Christmas gift.
I’m heartened by all the pro-imus and free speech posts. Who appointed the NAJB as masters of the universe entitled to dictate anyone’s employment terms? Why don’t they demand that Isaiah Thomas, rappers and music ececs be fired and permanently banished as well?
Hope that Citadel will have the spine to ignore these Stalinists! Can’t wait for Don Imus’ return with crew intact, badder than ever.
With a whole world full of evil and important issues out there why are these people picking on some old white guy trying to talk a little hip-hop?
Sample of Hip-Hop in link below. Mr. Fiddy Cent.

And a little Chris Rock, if you will:

Imus spoke “nappy-headed hos” at a little after 6:00 in the morning. His mistake was that he’s white and supposedly not allowed. Because what he said is not a violation of any law or regulation. And, furthermore, it has been repeated, oh, maybe a million times since that time over the public airwaves, just to make sure EVERYBODY in the whole wide world heard it, which proves there’s no regulation against saying NHH on the public airwaves.
So really what standard of conduct did he violate that caused vultures to come out of the woodwork and cause him to be fired? I have said from the beginning, if he inadvertently hurt someone’s feelings, the two-week suspension should have been sufficient.
And who appointed or elected these spokesmen, so-called, to have any say in whether he gets a job back or what might or might not be contained in his contract?
ANSWER: NOBODY!
And to the advertisers, I suggest they might want to think about all of us out here who are waiting with money in hand to buy their products when they sponsor Imus. I’ve got a lot of Proctor & Gamble products I’d like to buy, since I haven’t bought any of their products in the past six months.
The liberal left is at it’s scariest when then insist on thought-speech-language control…George Orwell had them pegged 70 years ago..he was way ahead of the time
What does the White Broadcasters Club say about this.. ???
Oh, there is no such group??
John,
First of all Imus isn’t conservative, he’s much like Bill Maher a “quintessential moderate. In fact he was the first to come to Maher’s defense when ABC dumped Politically Incorrec and he has promoted Real Time and other Bill Maher projects.
He’s anti war, Anti Bush, Anti BS. Ecactly what we need going into this Presidential season.
Is he a racist?
As a Listener of the Imus show for over 30 years I’d like to state that John Donald Imus is not a racist, a man should be judged by actions not schtick.
As a white kid growing up in central Jersey in the 70’s the first place I heard of Dr King was on the Imus in the Morning Program.
Imus introduced me to the blues.
Imus introduced me to the sermons of the Rev GE Patterson and the campaign of Harold Ford. If he truly is a “racist” he’s not a very good one.
As for the claim that Imus couldn’t be mimicking Hip-Hop or Rap because he doesn’t listen to it, not only does he listen but he played it on his show in mix with many other genres.
In particular I remember his using “Fuck Tha Police” by NWA as a bumper for years. He also was a big fan of Suge Knight and Death Row Records.
Like I said If Imus is a Racist, he’s not a very effective one.
Often times in this debate I’ve foun that people opposed to his return were just parroting what they heard elsewhere. Thats how the Main Stream Media works, they figure if they just keep repeating the same thing (fact or fiction) people will believe and accept it as fact (weapons of mass destruction anyone?)
I have a challenge for you, Watch this clip and if you still think that Imus is a racist then I’ll leave here and never come back.

Unbelievable that journalists would stand for censorship. These don’t appear to be journalists they appear to be political hacks in the hands of politicians who are trying to censor the airwaves to hear only what they want to hear.
This has gone to far! Do you realize shows like sanford and son all in the family the jeffersons just to name a few, were some of the funniest shows on TV if they had not been thought of till now they would never go on the air because of you people. WE CONSIDER THIS HUMOR NOT REAL LIFE WAKE UP STOP YOUR NONSENSE GET WITH THE PROGRAM SMILE AND MOVE ON YOU WILL LIVE LONGER.
I’d prefer reading in my native language, because my knowledge of your languange is no so well. But it was interesting! Look for some my links:
