Short interpretation of this article: Only news organizations which agree with Julian Friedland should be allowed to exist.

Stalinism anyone?

Ward Churchill seems to have a lot of brethren in Boulder.

I object to the author's tone that treats the news-watching audience like mindless sheep. Fox News is the highest rated show because people prefer it. Why they prefer it is a complex matter, but probably largely they all agree that it offers something the other news outlets do not. Simple as that. Other news outlets would serve their own organizations better by figuring out the News Corp model and modifying it to fit their own business goals instead of wasting their time bitching and moaning about "the cause" of journalism as part educational experience, part art form, and part service to the country. Aren't you being a little self-important?

If you believe government-controlled media is the way to go, then why choose the BBC model -- I hear the Chinese newspapers are government-controlled as well. Please stop oversimplifying a very complex industry that involves government, business, shareholders, pension funds, readers, and, yes, journalists, too. You only seem to understand a very limited journalist-perspective of the industry, but there are many other players...

"Still, PBS is widely considered our most trusted news service."

On what data do you base this statement?
