While I find this argument interesting and right on target with regard to many of its points, I think the author should not criticize the Save Darfur Coalition.

It is very challenging, unfortunately, to get many average Americans to care about ongoing, complex conflicts in Africa. The Coalition has done an excellent job mobilizing political support and securing needed funds for NGOs operating on the ground. These are actions that the average American can take. They can contact their legislators and send in a check.

Certainly, the Coalition and other Western organizations have helped Americans do more to end the genocide in Darfur than they did in 1994 when genocide commenced in Rwanda.

They are numerous books written by American and European scholars on the subject of Darfur, and I agree that more Americans should read them.

Criticizing a group dedicated to ending the slaughter and promoting a sustainable peace does nothing more than allow individuals to feel comfortable taking no action. Do you really want Americans to say, "I don't have the time to thoroughly understand the complex interplay between the environmental, political, and social issues that produced the genocide in Darfur, and I'm not sure where my government stands on the issue of supporting the rebels. Thus, I shall leave this issue for others to resolve and do nothing"?

I pray anyone who knows that innocent men, women and children are dying would take some action to help. Isn't it enough to know that children are caught in the middle of a war they did not start and cannot stop? Shouldn't we all be working to keep them safe, even if we don't understand anything about the conflict itself?
