WASHINGTON (AP) - A recent Newsweek poll showing Democrat Barack Obama leading top Republican presidential hopefuls could have been made up and might help al-Qaida, conservative commentator Ann Coulter said in her latest verbal broadside.
Coulter, a best-selling author known for outrageous and often controversial statements, was asked Sunday on Fox News’”At Large” what she thought about the survey results.
“I think this is Newsweek doing more push polling for al-Qaida,” she said, referring to campaign-season telephone calls to voters masquerading as neutral surveys but designed to build opposition to targeted candidates.
Asked by host Geraldo Rivera whether she thought Newsweek would make up the results, Coulter said, “Yes, I do,” adding, “In polls where people are actually allowed to vote, Republicans do a lot better.”
Coulter did not explain how the poll might help the terrorist group. Since the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001, some Republicans have argued that their party would do a better job of protecting the U.S. against terrorism than Democrats.
Coulter’s remark drew a response from Evans Witt, chief executive officer of Princeton Survey Research Associates International, which conducted the Newsweek survey.
“As the 2008 election campaign continues to heat up, I am sure that there will be informed and incisive criticisms of polls from many observers,” he said. Coulter’s comments “do not fit into this category,” he added.
Newsweek spokeswoman Jan Angilella said the magazine would have no comment.
In March, Coulter used a gay slur about Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards.

Why is this Fascist felame allowed so much airtime and coverage? And who in their “right” mnds would give any credence to the venom she spews. What I really want to know is who is funding her or sponsoring her in the attempt to shape right wing propaganda?
Well Al-Qaida thinks so, at least in-directly
Al-Qaida’s Number 2 mocked the US Congress bill setting a pullout timetable for US troops from Iraq, in a new insurgent video intercepted tonight by a US-based group.
In the video, Amman al-Zawahri – who acts as Osama bin Laden’s deputy – is shown in a white Arab robe and white turban, seated before a bookshelf, the Washington-based SITE Institute said.
Al-Zawahri speaks sarcastically of the US troop pullout tying war funding to a withdrawal timetable, said SITE, which tracks terror messaging. The one hour seven minutes long video was dated May and had English subtitles.
“This bill will deprive us of the opportunity to destroy the American forces which we have caught in a historic trap,” al-Zawahri says, adding that the bill is evidence of American “failure and frustration”.
“We ask Allah that they (US troops) only get out of it after losing 200,000 to 300,000 killed, in order that we give the spillers of blood in Washington and Europe an unforgettable lesson,” al-Zawahri added.
He made no mention of Bush vetoing the bill last Thursday – an indication the video may have been made after Congress passed the legislation but before the veto.
We are really not a nation of imbecilic reactionaries. Ann Coulter is a figment of someone’s imagination and does not really exist.
Al Qaeda don’t want us to leave the Middle East. If they don’t have US troops in that area of the world stirring up anti-American sentiments Al Qaeda will start losing recuits big-time and people will wake up and see that they have absolutely nothing to offer them except hate and destruction. If anyone is helping Al Qaeda, it’s people like Ann Coulter who help keep our trops over there stirring up resentment.
THe US should pull out of Iraq and give them a media black out, that way no one will read about them and we can start concentrating on issues back home.
Why do networks even allow this woman(?)on? Every couple of weeks, she says something really stupid that no-one with half a brain can take seriously, and bang, she is the news. Coulter is a great self-promoting circus freak, and P.T. Barnum would be proud of her. Besides, who actually thinks Fox is actual news anyway? Geraldo has a job there.
I love the comments about Coulter. Coulter is an abberation and the only reason that her books are “best-sellers” is that her conservative block sponsors buy boxes of her books and ship them off to libraries around the country.
It would be nice if everyone stopped paying attention to her mean-spirited, uncreative drivel that she thinks masquerades as intelligent political thought.
