We all know AT&T is evil. But starting June 3, it will be just a bit more evil, thanks to the political giving of its new CEO. The little things can rankle. Especially if you’re a customer of AT&T/Cingular Wireless. Then you have to accept that a portion of your cell phone bill each month goes to support radical rightwing politicians. Ed Whitacre, the current CEO of AT&T, is scheduled to step down in June. Whitacre has been described by Matt Stoller of MyDD.com alternately as “everything that’s wrong with American business” and “the man who wants to destroy the free internet.” The Wall Street Journal reported today that Randall Stephenson, will take over as chief executive and chairman of AT&T on June 3. He’s currently the COO of AT&T and the man who is helping Cingular roll out the iPhone. He’s also a Bush appointee to the National Security Telecommunications Advisory Committee. Where does Stephenson stand? A quick look at his political giving suggests he’s to the far to the right of Whitacre who at least made token contributions to Democrats — including pro-union Dick Gephardt and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee. With the exception of Rep. Henry Cuellar, a certified DINO, Stephenson’s giving is 100 percent republican in recent years, according to records provided by opensecrets.org. 12/28/1999 Rep. Dennis Hastert ( R-IL) $500 7/23/2003 President George W. Bush (R) $1,500 11/29/2004 Rep. Joe Barton, (R-TX) $1,000 6/13/2006 Denise Bode, Republican candidate for Congress (OK) $1,000 And if you’re wondering where he stands on Net Neutrality, i think this pretty much sums it up: SBC Chief Operating Officer Randall Stephenson was quoted in an industry newsletter saying, “We’re going to control the video on our network. The content guys will have to make a deal with us.” Stephenson’s statement was widely interpreted to mean that his company intends to block on its broadband network the video content of any companies or producers who have not struck a deal with SBC.

So - is there something we can do about this, as customers of ATT/SBC/Cingular?
And FoMoCo has given 10 to 100,000.00 at a whack to any thing supporting homosexuals and their causes …. so your point is ??
at least ATT is within the guidlines for political contrabutions , while the left leanning types do the big donations!!
Oh I forgot it’s ok if the contrabution goes to the left!!
GOOD GRIEF you neards worry me!!

“Starting June 3, AT&T/Cingular Wireless will give a portion of its customers’ cell-phone bills each month to support radical right-wing politicians.”
Uh??? You have to be joking? Your list maybe included one or two folks that maybe could be termed “radical right-wing” and that is pushing it.
And while I would not want AT&T from blaocking contact on my inernet connection … if they tried it people could go elsewhere.
Apparently Mr. Stephenson thinks the Republicans will be in power for the immediate future and wants to curry favor for his company. That’s the way the system works.

Try switching to Working Assets Long Distance. I’m pretty sure they offer cell service…I have them for my land based long distance service, and since Cingular is my cell service, I’ll be switching it soon. At least this way part of your bill (and you can donate more) will go to the people YOU want it to.
Hang up.
Good goin’ AT&T. Keep moving to the right. Eventually, you will reach the center.
The lefties don’t like it when a company chooses to support a view that’s not their own, and immediately launch hate-soaked hyserical diatribes intended to intimidate, not enlighten.

Sounds like you righties do a pretty good job yourselves when it comes to “hate-soaked hyserical diatribes intended to intimidate, not enlighten”, when someone chooses to support a point of view that differs from yours.
I loathe AT&T, I always have. I may not have a choice so far as a land line is concerned, but I’ll be darn if I am going to continue to give them my money so they can support the bunch of crooks and zealots residing inside the Beltway.
Working Assets also has a program where if you don’t owe more than $175 on your contract, they may be able to pay it for you in order to switch to their service.
If I were planning to launch a hate-soaked hyserical diatribe, I’d watch the righties, as they are so much better at it than the lefties, and I come from the center. From what I’ve seen, lately most of the genuine hatred comes from the right and anything from the left is generally a misguided reaction to the hatred aimed at them.
