NEW YORK — A CBS News producer was fired and the network apologized after a Katie Couric video essay on libraries was found to be plagiarized from the Wall Street Journal.
The essay was removed from the CBS Web site and an editor’s note was posted saying the item should have credited Jeffrey Zaslow of the Journal, the network said Tuesday.
The essays are carried regularly on Couric & Co., the anchor’s blog on the CBS News Web site. Couric and producers meet once a week to decide on topics and the producers write them for Couric to read on camera.
An editor for the Wall Street Journal called CBS News to point out the similarities of the April 4 notebook item to Zaslow’s article, headlined “Of the Places You’ll Go, Is the Library Still One of Them?” The pieces talk about how libraries are seen differently by children from their parents.
“We were horrified,” CBS News spokeswoman Sandra Genelius said. “It was almost verbatim.”
CBS would not identify the producer fired for the transgression.

Why does this “not” surprise me. Just like Harvard University’s Professor Dershowitz,(The Case for Israel) there’s alot if it going around.
maybe they should plagiarize Dan Rather.
I am never surprised to find that a contemporary cable or broadcast anchor is so out of touch with what is being written in the major press organs, not to mention books with covers and footnotes, that he/she cannot recognize the pirated words issuing from his/her mouth. It is only a matter of time until the skill level of cable and broadcast anchors is so low that candidates for these jobs will be swarming across our borders in the certainty that one need not know anything to be an anchor except how to take a hand cue.
It is pathetic that Ms. Couric was just reading someone else’s plagiarized copy and had no clue about it. Did Peter Jennings and Walter Cronkite, for instance, ever read anything that they didn’t write or OK beforehand?
Kudos, at least, to CBS for handling this fast.
Why is talking-head Couric still being paid by ANYbody? It’s long been known that she’s nothing but a make-up job.
Katy Couric is unable to have a thought of her own.
Just what “they” want.
Okay, So now we know that Couric is only a talking head with nothing inside. Is this a surprise to anyone?
When, WHEN are we going to stop allowing
network news from dumbing down the entire media scene with ‘just a pretty face.’
I’m irritated with the whole shabang!
Televisoin news anchors should have to pass a basic competency test, much like the ones given in hbigh schools, and should not be allowed to accept a job, until they are able to pass that test!
