As predicted, the number of American soldiers killed in Iraq surpassed the number of civilian victims of the 9/11 terrorist attacks on Christmas. The total number of casualties (that is, soldiers killed or hurt in the war) has not been released to the public, but the Veterans Adminstration said in July that over 150,000 returning soldiers from Iraq and Afghanistan have filed for disability. The Associated Press reported:
The milestone in Iraq came on Christmas, nearly four years after the war began, according to a count by The Associated Press. In announcing the Monday deaths of three soldiers, the toll from those fighting the war surpassed the toll from those killed by terrorists in New York, Washington and Pennsylvania.
…Marine Lance Cpl. John Edward Hale was only 15 and living in Louisiana when the planes hit the World Trade Center, but he never forgot what happened. He joined the Marines after graduating high school last year, and was only in Iraq for three months when he was killed by a roadside bomb.
Michael Glover joined the Marines after his boyhood neighborhood — the Belle Harbor section of Queens — lost several residents in the Sept. 11 attacks. One of his best friends, an equities trainer at Cantor Fitzgerald LP, was among those killed at the trade center. And Belle Harbor, an enclave of police, firefighters and government workers, lost a large number of residents.
Glover was killed by a sniper while on patrol in Fallujah.
Though the number 2,973 might bear a certain symbolic significance, the story was not well reported across the mainstream media. Fox News Channel, for example, preferred a one-paragraph AP piece entitled, “9 Americans Killed in Iraq Over Christmas Weekend,” which does not mention the names or the total number of war dead. Fox did make the time on Christmas to report that “U.S. Army Hospital Prepares for Baby Boom After Soldiers Return From Iraq.”
