Guide to provide contact to hundreds of experts,
protest leaders and alternative media outlets for
journalists seeking sources beyond the GOP "Spin Zone"

NEW YORK, August 26, 2004 -- MediaChannel.org and Media for Democracy today released "The Unofficial Media Guide to the 2004 Republican National Convention" as a resource for journalists seeking a detour from the tightly scripted rhetoric at Madison Square Garden.

The Media Guide list hundreds of resources and experts available to reporters seeking to cover events -- from street protests, to big-money shmoozefests -- occurring throughout New York City next week. On Friday, Aug 27, MediaChannel.org will make The Guide available to the more than 16,000 journalists who received credentials to cover the Republican National Convention in New York next week.

An advanced copy was made available to select journalists at:

"MediaChannel.org prepared the 'Unofficial Media Guide' to help the more intrepid of these journalists maneuver the city's byways and barricades to get to the real stories of a democracy in action," said Timothy Karr, executive director of MediaChannel.org.

"Earlier this summer, the national news broadcasts, decided not to preempt reality TV programs to provide viewers with live coverage of the conventions," Karr said. "But the thousands of journalists from 50 states and more than 60 countries who are descending on the city confirm that, indeed, conventions can make for real news, and that our democracy deserves a higher billing than reality TV."

The Guide is designed to help journalists get to the week's most important stories and beyond.

Inside The Guide, journalists will find helpful listings of dozens of New York-based experts who are ready to talk on the record. The Guide also lists the coordinates of the spokespeople and protest groups that will be active throughout the city.

The Guide's listing of political bloggers and alternative news outlets links journalists to distinctly non-traditional points of view. A section on escaping the spin is useful for those needing shelter from the rhetoric of a furious political season. And an assessment of New York's power restaurants will help journalists go to where the political elite meet and eat.

The Guide also fits comfortably in a back pocket and will prove useful to have on hand as journalists make the rounds of our fine city.
