INTRODUCING MC-NET:
The Networking and Collaboration E-List for MediaChannel Affiliates
Why do we need MC-Net?
Who are the participants in MC-Net?
How do I
join?
How do I post
to the list?
What should
I post?
Are the posts
online anywhere?
How can I
find out more or offer feedback?
In response to numerous requests, and to provide an easy way for MediaChannel
affiliates to make contact with one another, we have launched MC-Net, the MediaChannel
Networking and Collaboration E-List. MC-Net, delivered to you in the form of an email each Thursday morning, includes brief requests and announcements from across the MediaChannel network.
Why Do We Need MC-Net?
This networking list enables MediaChannel affiliates to seek help or initiate
collaborations on ongoing and upcoming projects and discover advice, experts, resources
and colleagues across the global network. Here are some examples of things MC-Net can be
used for:
Calls for papers and speakers
(e.g., Journalist association meeting in Chicago, paper on media law needed for academic conference)
Ideas posed to the network members
(e.g., Fundraising strategies available, syndication of content for independent media sites)
Meeting colleagues
(e.g., Traveling to New York, would like to meet with community media groups)
Projects in development
(e.g., Asia-Pacific filmmakers group forming)
Requests for information
(e.g., Looking for data on EU childrens media laws)
Short announcements of resources available to other members
(e.g., New free resource guide for environmental journalists)
To invite collaboration
(e.g., MediaChannel Africa seeking regional media advisors/editors)
It should be kept in mind that this information and project list is to be used exclusively for seeking and offering information, advice, expertise, contacts and resources.
Who are the participants in MC-Net?
MC-Net connects our network of affiliates including media watch groups,
media reviews and publications, professional organizations, university
journalism departments, anti-censorship monitors, independent publishers and
editors, media arts collectives, press freedom groups, scholars and
researchers studying media and communications systems, media literacy
teachers, media reform advocates and media democracy activists,
media-studies and communications professors, policymakers and working
journalists worldwide.
HOW TO USE MC-NET
How Do I Join?
Although the MC-Net is strictly for the use of MediaChannel affilates, membership to MediaChannel's network of media issues organizations remains open. If associates of your organization would like to join the MC-Net, or if you would like to add another email address from your organization, simply enter your email address in the right column, or send a blank email from the new subscribing address to MC-Net-on@mail-list.com.
If you know of other friends and organizations that would be interested in joining, please have them contact us at join@mediachannel.org, or direct them to the MediaChannel affiliate application form.
How Do I Post To The List?
As a member of this group, you may send messages to the entire group using just one email
address: MC-Net@mail-list.com.
Your email must come from the same exact email address as is subscribed to the list.
What Should I Post?
MC-Net is intended specifically for MediaChannel affiliates to initiate collaborations, dialogue and the
exchange of expertise. Webmaster Doug George (doug@mediachannel.org) will lightly moderate
the list to approve or discard posts before they are sent to the whole network. Members
should respect email inbox space and keep posts short and to the point.
Members must include clear subject headings in your posts. We recommend using
categories within the subject heading of the emails sent to MC-Net. For example:
African Communications Policy Expert Needed in Germany, Collaborators Wanted for new Media
Arts Network, Fundraising Consultant Needed; Looking for Kenyan Media Policy Experts, Site
Manager Needed for Media Watchdog Philippines, Technical Assistance Needed On
Database, and etc.
In order to keep the e-list focused, we request that once individual contact is made, discussions and collaborations take place off-list, in private emails.
Are The Posts Online?
Yes, a web archive of
messages posted to the list exists at this address:
http://archive.mail-list.com/mc-net
The MediaChannel staff welcomes your participation in the MC-Net.
Feedback
We welcome and invite comments, feedback and ideas from MC-Net participants below. Or
send an email to Doug@MediaChannel.org.
