Media production promotes a wide variety of skills, introduces kids to traditional and new technologies and provides them with a way to express their creativity and tell their own stories. Working with a small budget? As the DIY (Do-it-Yourself) tradition has demonstrated, high tech is not the only option. For example, handmade photocopied 'zines, created for and by youth, with original stories and artwork, are as authentic as the latest in digital TV. "Media production engages and excites," says veteran filmmaker Andrew Garrison. "It leads to unexpected discoveries, increased self-awareness and esteem, sharpened critical thinking, analytical skills, group work skills and ability to communicate ideas."
