Bio JEROLD M. STARR is Executive Director of Citizens for Independent Public Broadcasting, a national campaign to promote restructuring of public broadcasting as an independent public trust and to empower community groups to democratize governance and programming at their local public broadcasting stations. Starr also is Professor of Sociology, West Virginia University. He received his Ph.D. in Sociology from Brandeis University and served on the faculty of the University of Pennsylvania, 1969-76. Starr also is Director of the Center for Social Studies Education in Pittsburgh, coordinator of a nationwide program to promote teaching of the Vietnam War in the public schools. A social activist for many years, Starr has been Co-Chair of the Save Pittsburgh Public Television campaign and founder and president of many local and national organizations, including the Association for Humanist Sociology. He has authored five books and numerous articles, including the forthcoming "The War Over Public Broadcasting" (Beacon Press, 2000). | |
